Why Aren’t My GPU Fans Spinning: Causes and Fixes?

Why Aren’t My GPU Fans Spinning: Causes and Fixes?

Posted on September 26, 2025September 26, 2025 By admin No Comments on Why Aren’t My GPU Fans Spinning: Causes and Fixes?

Introduction

Many users often ask why aren’t my GPU fans spinning? However, in most cases, this isn’t a cause for concern. Modern graphics cards do keep fans off and idle until there is a need for them. In some instances, fans not spinning can be a sign of trouble or threat. In this case, the issue held is worth some puzzle-solving.

Why Aren’t My GPU Fans Spinning?

Zero RPM Feature – The Most Common Reason

Most GPUs now have something called a zero RPM fan mode, which is often the most common answer to why aren’t my GPU fans spinning. This reduces the noise and fan wear and tear.

  • GPUs are able to run at 50 to 60 degrees, but fans are inactive.
  • While browsing the web, streaming or engaging in minimal GPU activity, fans remain unavailable in the most GPU cooled GPU.
  • Once gaming or high performing applications are deployed, the fan activity and functions are nominal.

If you can only observe inactivity against low fan speeds and temperatures, you should be notified, as this is simply the mode’s function.

Software or Driver Problems

If you are still wondering why aren’t my gpu fans spinning one possible reason is software or drives issues. Some GPU fans remain inactive as a result of system misconfiguration or outdated drivers.

  • Older drivers fail to produce proper fan functionality.
  • In MSI Afterburner, fan systems can be set too low on a curve and opt only for certain, more intense GPU use cases.

Fix:

  • Get the most recent drivers from respective manufacturers.
  • Adjust the fan settings using the software that came with the GPU.
  • BIOS on the GPU may need to be reinstalled or updated.

Power Supply and Cable Connections

Supplying power to the GPU must be done with care. Connections that are improperly seated may leave the fans starved for power.

  • Most GPUs come with a required 6-pin or 8-pin PCIe power connectors.
  • A fan that does not rotate may be the result of a connection that has been poorly made or lost entirely.
  • In very rare instances, the fan cable located inside the GPU cooler may be disconnected.

Fix:

  • Examine carefully the PSU and reattach all the cables.
  • If you feel comfortable enough, check the fan connector directly on the GPU.

Dust, Dirt, and Physical Blockages

Your computer case and GPU fans will accumulate dust and dirt as time passes, and this can impede blades or diminish airflow.

  • With fans at a standstill, the obstruction may be caused by wires.
  • Or some other object within the case.
  • In older fans, the possibility of having bearings that are stiff, or rigid, increases.

Fix:

  • Compressed air may be used to remove and reset dust.
  • Fan blades must be brushed with care.
  • Specific intervals for scheduled cleaning should be made, perhaps every three to six months, based on the user’s environment and their unique requirements.

Damage to Hardware or Defective Fans

If the fans are not spinning while under load, it is possible that the hardware is malfunctioning or has failed completely.

  • The blades may not turn if the motor of the fan has burned out.
  • If the fan is not spinning, and if power is being delivered, the wiring is most likely broken or loose.
  • Issues with the cooler assembly are sometimes the most critical.

Fix:

  • If the GPU is still under warranty, reach out to the manufacturer.
  • If warranty has expired, replace the fans as the majority of fans can be purchased on the internet.
  • As a last option, you can fit a third-party cooler for the GPU.

Ways to Confirm That Your GPU fans Are Operational

  1. Carry out a stress test using FurMark, Heaven, or 3DMark.

  2. Use HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner to track the GPU’s temperature.
  3. If the temperature increases to 70-80 degrees Celsius and the fans are not rotating, then there is an issue.

This test can be used to verify whether the fans require service.

FAQs

Q1. Is it normal for GPU fans not to spin at idle?

Yes. The majority of newer GPUs have “zero RPM mode” for low noise.

Q2. Do GPU fans run constantly while gaming?

Yes. Increases in GPU usage require fans to spin to prevent overheating.

Q3. Can I manually turn on GPU fans?

Msi Afterburner, Evga Precision, and AMD Adrenalin are programs that you can use to set fan speeds, among others.

Q4. What happens if GPU fans completely fail?

The GPU is going to have overheating issues, and throttle performance or turn off to prevent damage.

Q5. How often should I clean GPU fans?

Between 3-6 months, and more so in dusty environments.

Final Thoughts

Fans on GPUs not spinning are mostly considered normal due to zero RPM mode. However if you still face the problem and keep asking why aren’t my gpu fans spinning , then it  could be due to software, power, dust, or hardware issues. Regular maintenance, updated drivers, and appropriate monitoring system will keep the GPU protected. If problems still lie, repair or replacement will be the only option.
